Asian Forum on Human Rights hosted by RUC held in Beijing

The Asian Forum on Human Rights themed on “Environment, Climate Change and Human Rights” was held last Saturday online in Beijing, hosted by Renmin University of China (RUC), with experts and scholars from more than 20 countries and regions in Asia participating.

Lin Shangli, President of RUC, remarked in the opening speech that RUC would strengthen theoretical research and international exchanges on human rights, continuously deepening cooperation with universities and institutions in Asian countries and international organizations.

The theme of the forum was “Environment, Climate Change, and Human Rights”, with twelve sessions including Human Rights in Asian Perspective, Basic Theory of Environmental Rights, Achievements and Experiences of Asian Countries in Ensuring Environmental Rights, Legal Adaptation under Climate Change, State and Social Actions under Climate Change, Guarantee of Rights under Climate Change, National and International Guarantee Mechanisms of Environmental Rights, Environmental Rights and Sustainable Development Goals, Procedural Environmental Rights, Gender, Equality and Climate Change, Food, Health and Environment, and Special Session of Youth Forum.

The participants summarized the experience and achievements of environmental and human rights protection in Asian countries over the past decade, discussed environmental rights in the context of human rights and their realization in the context of climate change, and held in-depth exchanges and discussions on the themes of “Climate Change and Human Rights Protection: China’s Efforts and Contributions”, “New Concept of Ecological Civilization”, “Environmental Rights and the Code”, “International and Regional Cooperation Mechanisms for Environmental Protection”, and “Realistic Opportunities for Building a Consensus on Human Rights in Asian Countries”.

They expressed that China has been promoting the construction of ecological civilization in recent years and paying more attention to environmental health and procedural environmental rights, and the environmental human rights enjoyed by citizens have been better protected. Now that climate change has become a global issue, it is necessary to further enrich the knowledge system of human rights jurisprudence, promote the in-depth study of environmental rights theory, form a theoretical position and viewpoint on environmental rights with Asian characteristics, which is also in line with Asian political and cultural background, and contribute Asian solutions and Asian wisdom to effectively respond to climate change and protect human rights for mankind.
