RUC holds “The First National Contemporary English Literature Frontier Research Academic Forum for Undergraduates”

On May 28, hosted by Renmin University of China, “The First National Contemporary English Literature Frontier Research Academic Forum for Undergraduates” was held. Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Normal University, and Renmin University of China Press co-organized the forum. A total of 517 scholars and college students from 116 universities and research institutes across the country gathered online, focused on the frontier issues of contemporary English literature and discussed literary and realistic issues in an all-round and multi-dimensional way, aiming to improve the awareness, academic enthusiasm, theoretical literacy and quality of undergraduates. It has also promoted the academic exchanges of foreign language subjects in these universities.

At the opening ceremony of the main venue, Prof.Du Peng, Vice President of Renmin University of China, delivered an opening speech, and Chen Shidan, a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Foreign Languages of RUC, presided over the ceremony. Du appreciated  contemporary English literature’s concern for the real world. He pointed out that in the context of globalization, human society has become increasingly complex and diverse, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, contradictions in politics, economy, society, culture and ecology are growing more prominent. The crises facing human beings prompt everyone to contemplate and find way out. This forum is of great value in cultivating undergraduates’ awareness to discover problems, their academic literacy and scientific research ability.

 

After the opening ceremony, Prof.Liu Jianhua of Peking University, Prof.Zhang Jian of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Prof. Zhang Yan of Beijing Normal University, Prof. An Feng of Tsinghua University and Prof. Chen Shidan made keynote speeches respectively. The session was hosted by Prof.Guo Qiqing from Beijing Foreign Studies University. On the afternoon, a sub-forum discussion was held where participants were divided into 24 sub-forums in line with 9 different topics.

 

Chen presided over the closing ceremony and made a summary.  Prof.Chen Fang, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Prof.Tian Lili, Deputy Dean, Li Jiawei, Deputy Secretary, and Zhang Nandiyang, Deputy Director of the School’s Academic Affairs Office attended the opening ceremony. Zhang Nandiyang and Tian Lili made concluding remarks. Dozens of students from the School of Foreign Languages have prepared for the holding of the forum and provided supports for the forum.
