French Ambassador to China Laurent Bili Visited RUC

On December 22nd, French Ambassador to China Laurent Bili visited Renmin University of China. Prof. JIN Nuo, Chairwoman of the RUC University Council, met with Mr. Bili and his colleagues and had an in-depth exchange of views on further promoting educational and cultural exchanges between France and China.

Prof. JIN welcomed Mr. Bili’s visit to RUC and the 2020 Forum on Education, Women and Sustainable Development. Prof. JIN said that Renmin University and France share a solid foundation of cooperation in higher education, academy, cultural exchanges and other areas. The RUC Sino-French Institute, establishment of which relied on the support of governments of both countries and the French partner institutions, is an important platform for cultivating high-quality professionals and enhancing the international influence of Renmin University. On behalf of the University, Prof. JIN expressed her gratitude to the French Embassy in China, the French Ministry of Education and other relevant French government departments for their long-term attention and support. She also pointed out that the COVID-19 outbreak has had a huge impact on higher education exchanges and collaborations, and universities and institutes need to work together in face of new challenges for more development opportunities.

Mr. Bili said he was glad to visit RUC and exchange views with RUC faculties and students. He expressed his appreciation to Renmin University for its long-term efforts to expand high-level education and academic collaborations, as well as its remarkable achievements in exchanges and cooperation with French higher education institutes. He spoke highly of the achievements of the RUC Sino-French Institute.

In addition, both sides agreed that under the framework of the Action plan for Franco-Chinese relations, the two sides will work closely to innovate interdisciplinary education and expand interdisciplinary research. The two sides will also actively work together in the preparation of RUC Ningxia International College, opening up new opportunities for China-France collaborations in western China.

Along with Mr. Bili, guests from the French Embassy to China also included: Mr. Mikaël Hautchamp, Minister-Counsellor for Culture, Education and Technology; Ms. Gabrielle Miséré, Political Counsellor; Prof. Jean-Francois Doulet, Attache of Higher Education Cooperation; and Ms. Lénaïck Le Peutrec, Director of Translation. Prof. ZHANG Xiaojing, Chairwoman of RUC School of Education, Prof. SHI Yanan, Director of RUC International Office, and Mr. FANG Weiwei, Chairman of the RUC Suzhou Campus, attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Mr. Bili visited RUC Law School and had a meeting with Prof. WANG Yi, RUC Vice President and Dean of Law School, Prof. CHENG Lei, Vice Dean of Law School, Prof. SHI Jiayou, Prof. ZHU Xiao and Prof. ZHENG Aiqing.

Prof. WANG Yi introduced the collaborations between RUC Law School and some French institutes in the fields of civil law, constitution, cultural heritage law and environment law. RUC Law school was the first institute in China to carry out collaborations with French institutes and one of the Chinese law schools with the closest connections with French institutes. He pointed out that the French Civil Code is an important law during the transition period from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization in human history, and it is of great reference value for the compilation and formulation of Chinese Civil Code.

During the talks, the two sides had in-depth conversation in further promoting bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the field of law studies. The Law School teachers team and Mr. Bili exchanged views and reached several consensuses in academic collaborations in the fields of civil code, health law, labor and social security law, criminal law and criminal procedure law.
