Confucius Institute at the University of Costa Rica

In June 2007, the governments of Costa Rica and the People’s Republic of China agreed to establish diplomatic relations, enabling the formalization of the growing trade and the expansion of various activities, as well as establishing relations with the education sector and in particular with the universities, in order to promote cultural exchange andChinese language teaching.On November17, 2008, during the President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Hu Jintao’s visit to Costa Rica, the agreement for the creation of the Confucius Institute at University of Costa Rica (CI-UCR) was signed.

On August7, 2009, the inauguration ceremony took place under the presence of Professor Ji Baocheng, President of Renmin University of China, the partner university, and Dr. Yamileth González, Rector of UCR.

In this context, the University of Costa Ricastarted the Confucius Institute on its campus, the first and only one in the country and Central America, for the purpose of promoting the teaching of Chinese language, disseminating knowledge about Chinese society and culture, as well as the exchange and cooperation in academic and cultural fields between universities in China and the University of Costa Rica.

CI-UCR is committed inorganizing and sponsoring different activities related to Chinese culture, increasing the knowledge about China and the implementation of Chinese language courses.

Since Chinese courses started in March 2010, the number of students enrolled has increased considerably, beginning with 73  to 192 students  in August 2012.

At the same time, CI-UCR has implemented a great variety of courses and cultural activities that have positively reached the academic community as well as the national community.

This rich cultural agenda includes relevant aspects of Chinese culture such as Calligraphy and Tai Chi, art exhibitions, cine-forums, panel discussions, and lectures.

For the first semester of 2012, more than 15 cultural activities have been organized with more than 1000 people participating.

With the support of Hanban, Renmin University of China and the University of Costa Rica, CI-UCR, has become a leading center in teaching Chinese language and promoting Chinese culture in Costa Rica.

Confucius Institute at the Columbia University

Confucius Institute at the Columbia University was founded in 2009 and it mainly engaged in Sinology and China studies, studying teaching materials, teaching methods and teaching modes suitable for U.S. students and training Chinese language teachers. In addition, it also focused on enhancing the influence and status of China studies and Sinology in U.S. and even in the world’s academic circles, and cultivating scholars and professors engaged in Sinology and China studies.In 2011, Columbia University opened its summer courses to three universities in mainland China for the first time. Renmin University of China, as its important partner and a key university in China, was one of them. Besides, this opportunity promoted the carrying out of “management cadres overseas training program” of Renmin University of China in Columbia University.

Confucius Institute at Tel-Aviv University

The Confucius Institute at Tel-Aviv University (CITAU) is the fruitful result of cooperative work between Tel-Aviv University and the Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Hanban). Our institute like other Confucius Institutes in the world serves to enhance the study of Chinese language and culture. In addition, CITAU encourages the academic research of diverse aspects of Chinese civilization and history. Our Institute provides various courses in Chinese language for general public and regularly arranges concerts, lectures, exhibitions and performances, featuring wonderful and multifaceted Chinese culture. In order to stimulate sinological research, CITAU organizes scientific conferences and provides scholarships and awards for the excellent students.The first of the two main fields of CITAU’s activity is the Israeli general public. CITAU’s purpose here is to introduce and popularize Chinese cultural values and language.  The second is Tel-Aviv University, where, with close collaboration of East Asian Studies Department, CITAU promotes various educational programs and academic researches dedicated to China.

Besides, the Institute initiates Israeli elementary, middle and high schools’ pupils into Chinese language and culture by means of lessons and hobby groups, providing schools with professional teachers and necessary teaching materials.

CITAU also cooperates with the School of Education at Tel-Aviv University in the program of Chinese Teaching Certificate.

The Head of the Confucius Institute at Tel-Aviv University is Professor Meir Shahar. The members of the Institute’s administration are the founding director of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies Professor Raanan Rein and the Rector of Tel-Aviv University Professor Aron Shai.

Confucius Institute at the University of Chicago (CIUC)

The Confucius Institute at the University of Chicago (CIUC) was inaugurated on June 1, 2010. Founded as a research-oriented Confucius Institute, it promotes the Chinese language teaching as well as supports a broad program of research. It also fosters academic and cultural exchange between the University of Chicago and Chinese academic institutions, which appears to be an ourstanding work. Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki

The decision to establish the Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki was made in September 2006 when the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao paid an official visit to Finland and met Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. The formal agreement was signed on May 23, 2007 by Rector Ilkka Niiniluoto and the Ambassador of China Madame Ma Keqing representing the Chinese Language Council international. The Confucius Institute started its operation in September 2007.On October 5, 2007 the Institute celebrated the opening ceremony on which Ji Baocheng, President of Renmin University of China, attended the Inaugural Ceremony of CI at the University of Helsinki. The Chinese partner university of the Confucius Institute is Renmin University of China (RUC).

Strongly supported both by Hanban and Renmin University of China, our CI has greatly endeavored to carry out the major tasks of promoting the Chinese language and culture in the past five years .

Confucius Institute at the University of Zimbabwe

The Confucius institute at the University of Zimbabwe has been integrated into the  academic structures of University of Zimbabwe. The institute has, in the past five and a half years, provided the bridge for the establishment of linkages and exchange between the University of Zimbabwe and Chinese universities.Since September 2007, the University of Zimbabwe has offered Chinese Language and Cultural Studies as a Bachelor of Arts subject that has proved to be very popular among undergraduate students. Furthermore, the subject is also available to postgraduate students and students registered for Tourism and Hospitality Management, as a minor, and CIUZ also provides short courses to members of the public.

CIUZhas sent59 undergraduate students to Renmin University of China to attend the International Summer School, together with students from all over the world.

CIUZ also coordinates culture activities and programs with the embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Zimbabwe. The other important role CIUZplays is to provide information and consultative services concerning China’s education and culture to students wish to study in China and to members of the public are willing to engage China.

Copenhagen Business Confucius Institute in Denmark

Copenhagen Business Confucius Institute (CI) was established on September 4,2008 in collaboration withRenmin University of China and Copenhagen Business School , with the sponsorship and authorisation of Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Council International , under the Ministry of Education, China.The mission of this CI is to offer academic Chinese courses, Chinese business courses, public lectures, seminars and conferences on Chinese studies, Chinese culture and the Chinese language. This institution aims to develop effective Sino-Danish business relationships and foster the understanding of business culture in China. Besides, it also arranges language salon and language study trips to China.

It was formally launched on March 2nd 2009. The Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

The Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan (CI-UM) promotes substantial interactions with China’s arts and cultures in the U-M community and beyond. The UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

UCD Confucius Institute was launched by the Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peijan on  September 26, 2006. It is the first Confucius Institute in Ireland dedicated to the promotion and development of Chinese language, culture, studies and business.  The Institute is a joint venture between the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), Renmin University of China and UCD. It is located on UCD’s Belfield campus.The Institute’s mission is to work with government, business field and academia in Ireland and China to develop stronger educational, cultural and commercial links between this two countries.

Since the establishment of the UCD Confucius Institute, it has been offering innovative and flexible modules and courses in Chinese language, culture, business etc. to not only students at UCD, but also the wider community including local secondary schools, companies and the general public in Ireland. Up till now, over 5,000 people have registered and learnt various modules and courses offered by the Institute over the past six years. The Institute has been awarded three times the accolade of Confucius Institute of the Year worldwide.

The UCD Confucius Institute has been nationally and internationally recognised as having made a significant contribution to the development of strong cultural and economic links between China and Ireland. Its main activities include:

  • Promoting an awareness of Chinese language and culture in Ireland;
  • Acting as a focal point to support China-related activities in Dublin and beyond;

Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston

The Confucius Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston is part of an international network of more than 385 prestigious Confucius Institutes in 96 countries worldwide.The Confucius Institute facilitates rich and cultural exchange between the U.S. and China. It has sponsored many programs of Hanban to educate Americans about Chinese language and culture for the past five years.

The University of Massachusetts is the only Confucius Institute in the local place, and one of the only six Confucius Institute in the U.S. Madam Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, came to Boston for the inauguration of the institute in 2006. Currently, more than 280 Chinese students have been issued international visas study on the Boston campus.

Chengyun Liu, PhD, is a visiting scholar from Renmin University of China (RUC), one of the most prestigious universities in China with a distinct focus on humanities and social sciences. He serves as the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute.

Baifeng Sun brings a wealth of teaching experience to her role as associate director of the prestigious University of Massachusetts Confucius Institute.
