RUC establishes 3 new undergraduate majors

Recently, the Education Department published 2016 General Institutes of Higher Education Undergraduate Majors Records and Results Notice, which approved RUC to establish the majors of World History, Data Science & Technology, and Labor Economics.

Currently, RUC has altogether 80 majors (not including Sinology Studies), categorized under philosophy, economics, literature, history, law, management, Neo-Confucianism, engineering, and the fine arts, 9 academic disciplines and 30 major categories, including 64 fundamental courses, 9 ad hoc majors, and 7 state established majors.

According to the introduction, under current internationalization, and under the background of globalization, cross-cultural communication has become increasingly important. RUC has set up a World History major, which will focus on the evolution of the ancient and modern world and the developing trend of the learning world history as it develops. This course aims to cultivate solid knowledge of the history of the world, strong cross-cultural understanding ability, excellent foreign language skills, and open international vision of comprehensive professional talents, in order to meet the needs of the country’s social development.

In today’s society, there is a growing demand for talents in data science and technology based on data analysis, calculation and computer technology. The Data Science and Technology major will include statistics and research data, backed by the School of Statistics and School of Information Sciences, and supported by other RUC disciplines to complement each other, foster data analysis, computer technology and field specialization, to develop comprehensive data sciences talents and meet the states demand for data statistics specialists.

China’s urbanization due to economic and social development, human capital, employment and startups, income distribution and population structure change, and social security are all major issues closely related to labor economics. To adapt to China’s economic and social development and meet the needs of the state talents, the Labor Economics major has been set up, with RUC School of Labor and Human Resources running it, with support from the School of Economics and School of Finance, School of Business and economics professors, leveraging RUC Humanities and Social Sciences, to cultivate great education and bring to the forefront of labor economics the edification of professional talents.
